Crime on tribal lands involves a complex web of overlapping jurisdictions that changes with the severity of the crime and the nature of both victim and offender. In recent years, the Tribal Law and Order Act (TLOA) and the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) have given tribes increased sentencing and jurisdiction over domestic violence.
